Inflammation is a repair process associated with pain and swelling in acute trauma or sports injury. Unfortunately it can become chronic and cause tissue damage as in rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Inflammation is involved in the growth of cancers, “the wound that will not heal”. It triggers cancerous changes in cells, speeds tumor growth, initiates blood vessel growth into tumors (angiogenesis), and promotes the malignant properties of invasion and spread (metastasis). Managing inflammation requires control of pro-inflammatory histamine, fibrin, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa), eicosanoids such as arachidonic acid (AA), prostaglandins (PGE) and leukotrienes such as cycloxygenase (COX), and lipoxygenase (LOX).
Synthetic drugs which suppress inflammation such as corticosteroids and NSAID’s ( non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) have significant side effects. NSAID’s create an imbalance in the regulation of COX2 -PGE2 and COX1 – thromboxanes, creating risk of clots and thus stroke and heart attack. Biologically sourced anti-inflammatories control painful and damaging inflammation without increasing risk of clots.
Curcumin from the yellow curry spice tumeric root is an excellent regulator of inflammation. Its bioavailability is poor, so it requires bromelain or bioperine to absorb at medically significant levels. It is a down-regulator of nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) which controls inflammatory products such as COX2 and PGE2. These are major growth factors in cancer. Curcumin also suppresses cancer by maintaining DNA methylation, promoting pro-apoptotic p53 gene, inhibiting tumor survival genes egr-1, c-myc and bcl-XL, and many tyrosine kinases. It is not used during chemotherapy, but is useful before and after, and is very helpful during radiation therapy. Curcumin is a powerful support for detoxification, slowing Phase I to reduce build-up of reactive oxygenated toxins, while increasing phase II conjugation reactions. It cannot provoke clots and heart attacks or strokes as do the NSAID drugs such as Vioxx, as it inhibits platelet aggregation and does not increase thromboxanes. The only contraindication is in cases of biliary tract obstruction, as it is a mild cholagogue.
Boswellia serrata or frankincense has been used as an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever since Biblical times. The primary
action of the pentacyclic triterpene boswellic acids is the regulation of lysyl oxidase = LOX, controlling chronic rheumatic inflammation.
Cartilage
and connective tissue are protected from glycosamonglycan degradation. It reduces risk of hypoxia-induced metastasis of cancer,
as LOX regulates collagen formation, beta1-integrins and focal adhesion kinase. It is especially useful in brain cancers where
it controls edema, induces apoptosis and is directly cytotoxic to glioma
cells.
Quercetin is a natural bioflavenoid from onions and apples. It blocks COX2 and LOX5 pathways, phospholipase 2 and many steps in eicosanoid metabolism, thus inhibiting acute phase inflammation. Quercetin is also a clinically significant inhibitor of liver production of histamine, making it a powerful suppressor of allergy reactions. It is very useful in cancer as it is a potent inhibitor of transforming growth factor alpha (TGFa), mutant p53 protein, ras protein, heat shock proteins, tyrosine kinases. It is an aromatase inhibitor, reducing estrogen growth factor in breast cancer.
Bromelain from pineapple stems is a proteolytic enzyme which degrades kinins associated with pain, dissolves fibrin in clots, reducing inflammation and edema. It activates series 1 prostaglandins via modulation of arachidonic acid metabolism. It is excellent in the repair of muscle strains and ligament or tendon sprains. It is very helpful in cerebral edema, as seen with brain tumors. It is an essential ingredient in this formula to allow adequate absorption of the curcumin and quercetin components.
